6 Essential Tips for a Glamorous
Cocktail Party Reception

tomato-tartare-horsdoeuvres-cocktail-party.jpg blood-orange-margarita.jpg

Photo: Jessica Craig-Martin

If a formal multicourse dinner in a stately ballroom is out of your budget, or just doesn't feel very you, scale back the pomp of a traditional reception and ramp up the good times with an elegant cocktail party instead. By turning the "mingling hour" into the main event (hors d'oeuvres are usually guests' favorite part of the evening anyway) and including only the meaningful-to-you traditions, you can host a celebration that still feels like a wedding—minus the hefty price tag.

Venue & Decor
Host a cocktail party anywhere—an art gallery, your favorite neighborhood bistro, or a historic house. Restaurants and hotels are particularly amenable because their in-house staff knows the drill, and you can eliminate the extra expense of an outside catering company&mdashnot to mention rentals! Flowers are an important touch, so consider hiring a florist or having a friend create arrangements. And even though you're throwing a roving reception, it's a good idea to provide seating. Cater to older folks with traditional table-and-chair groupings, and create pockets of intrigue for the youngsters with high-tops and tufted banquettes. Last, keep the lighting dim—it flatters everyone and keeps the mood festive.

Dress Code
It's your wedding—feel free to go full-on traditional, or mix it up in something short and flirty. Specify what guests should wear on your invitation ("cocktail attire" is foolproof), and if you're having a bridal party, consider putting your own festive spin on the bridesmaids' dresses. Instead of going for identical looks, scan the fashion glossies for a color you love, broadcast your choice, and let your 'maids choose their own individual styles in the selected shade. This will look terrific in photos while allowing their personalities to shine. (And they'll love you forever for letting them pick dresses they actually like!)

Food & Drink
Make it clear on the invitation that a full meal will not be served. "Please join us for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres following the ceremony" does the job—and is a necessary nudge to heavy drinkers who would, on otherwise empty stomachs, hang from chandeliers. Plan to have 8 to 12 different amuse-bouches in rotation (count on each guest's eating six per hour), and be mindful of diverse tastes and dietary restrictions when selecting appetizers. Bolster passed bites with a few stations—from a display of great cheeses to a raw bar of oysters, shrimp, and clams. As for the spirits, you can opt to provide either a full bar or have champagne, wine, and a signature cocktail.

Music
If you want a dance party, and piping in your own music from an iPod is out of the question (though there's nothing wrong with that), then book a DJ, as an 8-to-12-piece band would likely overwhelm the venue. Carve out a front-and-center spot for the dance floor, and open it up an hour into the festivities. If your party is more about conversation and write-home-about-it food, that's quite all right, but don't forgo music altogether. Hire a small ensemble to play live tunes in the background; whether it's a jazz trio with a front man jamming on phonographs or costumed gals crooning French chansons from the '30s, music is key!

Cake & Dessert
Choose the traditions that feel right for you. After all those passed hors d'oeuvres, a traditional tiered cake might be the perfect counterpoint. If so, be sure to give the cake the limelight, just as you would at a seated reception. After the well-documented cutting (slice, feed, smooch, snap!), have servers carry out pieces of cake and flutes of bubbly. Consider passing additional desserts—mini crème brûlées, panna-cotta parfaits, or brandied sugar candy. For last call, serve boozy milkshake shots to energize the crowd for the after-party—whether it's planned or just an impromptu migration to the nearest bar.

Run-of-Show
Since this kind of party runs at a faster clip than the average reception (three hours, say, compared with five), you'll want to schedule a few key wedding moments throughout the night. The best strategy: Pass hors d'oeuvres for an hour before segueing into the first dance. Then open the food stations to keep guests on their gustatory toes. About two-and-a-half hours into the party, cut the cake. Last, wind down the evening with a few time-honored rituals, like the bouquet toss and toasts from your nearest and dearest. Be mindful that toast-givers may be loose-lipped this late in the evening, so prepare to flinch a little—and laugh a lot.

Real Honeymoon: Anne & Scott
in Tahiti

Anne and Scott's enviable honeymoon in gorgeous Tahiti struck a rare and perfect balance between rejuvenating relaxation and exciting outdoor activity. "We wanted a beach vacation that was more adventurous than Mexico or Hawaii, but not as far as Australia," says Anne. "Tahiti was the perfect distance (an eight and half hour flight from Los Angeles) and the huts over the water thing really got us!"

After spending their first night at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort in Papeete—which is situated close to Tahiti's main airport and "makes for an easy stay on the way in or out of the country," says Anne—they were off to the smaller island of Moorea.

tahiti-real-honeymoon-intercontinental-moorea.jpg tahiti-real-honeymoon-intercontinental-moorea-beach.jpg

Photo: Courtesy of Anne Ziegler

"Moorea was the most 'active' part of our honeymoon," says Anne. "My husband swam with sharks and sting rays—while I watched anxiously from the boat—and we did a half day guided hike through the mountains, which was fabulous."

tahiti-real-honeymoon-shark.jpg tahiti-real-honeymoon-swimming-sharks.jpg tahiti-real-honeymoon-hiking-moorea.jpg tahiti-real-honeymoon-moorea-hiking.jpg

Following four nights at the InterContinental Moorea, it was off to breathtaking Le Taha'a Island Resort and Spa. "This place is heaven on earth," says the bride.

tahiti-real-honeymoon-huts-over-water.jpg tahiti-real-honeymoon-flower-crown.jpg tahiti-real-honeymoon-le-tahaa-hotel-room.jpg

Their five-night stay overlapped with a "tropical depression"—known as a baby monsoon to us less meteorologically inclined—but Anne and Scott still loved every minute of their time on the Le Taha'a's lush grounds. "The staff at the Ta ha'a really tried to stay positive about the weather, which we appreciated," says Anne. "But seriously, it gave us an excuse to relax, take a few naps, and really unwind." Their tip for (literally) weathering the storm: Indulge in plenty of rosé and French fries!

The weather certainly didn't put a damper on the cuisine, which was fabulous, says Anne—especially the poisson cru, a Tahitian raw fish salad with fresh veggies, lemon, and coconut milk. "We had a special meal at Chez Louise, which was a short boat ride from the hotel. Louise cooks up a feast for you in her home—hence the name, Chez Louise—and she is quite the character."

Leaving cloudy skies behind them, Anne and Scott wrapped up their tropical honeymoon at the gorgeous St. Regis Bora Bora. "We loved riding bikes around the property and had a great time enjoying the beach, sailing, and kayaking," says Anne. The newlyweds also enjoyed a meal at Lagoon, a Jean-Georges restaurant at the St. Regis. The restaurant is suspended over the water and provides the most beautiful spot to watch a sunset, says the bride.

If you've noticed the wide range of shapes and styles Angelina Jolie prefers to sport both on the red carpet and off, you aren't the only one. "I was inspired by Angelina's incredible versatility and openness to different silhouettes and designs," says Rivini designer Rita Vinieris when creating a gown for the star. "She has an uncanny ability to wear a dress and not let the dress wear her." Vinieris imagines Jolie wearing a handwoven silk-charmeuse gown shrouded in tulle across the bust and neckline. The skirt of her design, which she calls Danielle, features hand-dyed ostrich feathers dusted in a flurry of crystals and accented with a tulle-covered crystal belt. "Angelina is a fashion icon," Vinieris adds, "with a tremendous ability to exude modern, understated elegance while retaining a signature look all her own."

Family-Friendly Honeymoon Ideas Inspired by Brad and Angie

brad-pitt-angelina-jolie-with-kids.jpg

Photo: Getty

Fresh off their engagement, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie jetsetted to the tropical Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador. But the couple wasn't looking for a romantic retreat—the trip was very much a family vacation with each of the six little Jolie-Pitts in attendance. The famous duo rarely travels without their children and even takes turns working on films so they can stick together. With that in mind, we asked Rachel Jacoby, a hotel expert at Oyster.com, to suggest luxurious—and kid-friendly—destinations for a honeymoon that's sure to be a family affair. These five spots offer much sought after seclusion, over-the-top luxury, as well as plenty of amenities to keep the youngsters entertained.

Hotel Le Bristol (Paris, France)
This 88-room haven first opened its doors in 1925 and has since maintained its reputation as one of the most luxurious hotels in all of Paris. Hotel Le Bristol's amazing amenities include a sunlit indoor pool, a 3-star Michelin restaurant, Epicure, and an indulgent three-story spa, featuring a Turkish bath. This posh spot is family-friendly thanks to their Children's Programme, a chic enclave where the gang can hang out while mom and dad soak in incredible city views and excellent shopping along Avenue Montaigne and the Champs Elysee.

Kahala Hotel and Resort (Oahu, Hawaii)
Though it's been a celebrity retreat since 1964 (the privacy here is nearly unparalleled), the vibe at Kahala Hotel and Resort feels way more family-fun than pretentious glitz. Kid-approved entertainment at Kahala includes Dolphin Quest—which offers the only chance to swim with the sea mammals on Oahu—and a dedicated children's pool. For a more romantic honeymoon setting, Brad and Angie can sneak off to the resort's "kissing point," a picturesque spot to steal a few quiet moments after the brood's in bed.

Four Seasons Nevis (Nevis, West Indies)
Accessible only by boat—and far the from paparazzi lens—the secluded Four Seasons Nevis offers beautifully decorated rooms with breathtaking views of the nearby mountains and bright blue ocean. And this romantic resort isn't just for lovebirds. Three pools, multiple athletic courts, and a seriously cool kids' club packed with games, toys, and activities based on the native flora and fauna ensure that the little ones are always entertained.

St. Regis Punta Mita (Riviera Nayarit, Mexico)
Nestled amongst 22 acres of fairways and tropical gardens, the posh St. Regis Punta Mita is, in a word, stunning. The grounds offer three beach-side pools, acres of peaceful gardens, and an incredible stretch of white-sand beach highlighted with rocky coves. And if Brad and Angie need a break from the sun, they can retreat to the super luxe spa or just enjoy the interior's high-end decor. It should be no surprise that a retreat with this much attention to detail is also just as invested in the experience of its younger guests. St. Regis Punta Mita boasts The Tortuga Children's Club, the most comprehensive (and high end) kids' program in Riviera Nayarit, which features a children's spa, an all-inclusive dining program, and plenty of activities like treasure hunts and piñata-making workshops.

One & Only Palmilla (Los Cabos, Mexico)
Although everything at the One & Only Palmilla comes at an exorbitant price, it's worth the splurge—especially on a movie star's budget. A breathtaking infinity pool, ocean-side spa treatment rooms, and four on-site restaurants supervised by a top-notch chef make this hotel hard to pass up. Additional perks like luggage unpacking, daily fruit and cocktail snack deliveries, an aromatherapy turndown menu, and a 24-hour shared butler service set this property far apart from any other resort in Cabo. And don't worry about the kids—their club offers free activities and gifts for the little ones.

Angelina Jolie's Fantasy Wedding Gown Sketch: David Tutera

angelina-jolie-wedding-dress-david-tutera.jpg

Illustration: Courtesy of David Tutera for Mon Cheri

Designing for Mon Cheri, event planner and host of WE TV's My Fair Wedding David Tutera took a stab at what Angie might wear on her wedding day, explaining that he sees "Angelina wearing a form fitting, elegant silhouette with a boned corset bodice to show off her amazing figure. Tutera celebrated his own nuptials to Ryan Jurica eight years ago, a lavish destination event in Vermont that included a 1920s pavilion, horse-drawn carriages, a spa brunch, and a candle-lit 17th-century church ceremony. In that same spirit, Tutera imagines an equally dramatic look for the star, namely through color: "I envision the color of her dress in a champagne or warm organic tone crafted from raw silk."

Flower Girl Looks Inspired by the Jolie-Pitt Kids

jolie-pitt-kids-airport-.jpg

There's no doubt Brad and Angelina's ever-expanding brood will play a large part in their wedding day. The kids' collective wish for their parents to officially tie the knot was a huge motivator for the engagement, as the couple had originally vowed not to marry in protest of unequal marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

So now that the youngsters finally convinced dad to get down on one knee—with a 16-carat table-cut diamond no less—it's time to think about what they'll wear! Comfort is key when outfitting little ones for a wedding, but we doubt the Jolie-Pitt six-pack will skimp on style. We asked Sara Morgan, founder of Tailored, to pick a few key pieces that speak to the individual styles of each Jolie-Pitt kiddo, as well as Brad and Angie's wordly wedding style.

Will Angelina Jolie Wear a Chanel Wedding Dress?

angelina-jolie-chanel-wedding-dress.jpg

Photos: Fairchild Archive

Drew Barrymore may not be the only celebrity bride to wear Chanel down the aisle this year. With Brad Pitt's new role as the face of Chanel No. 5 (the first male spokesperson in the scent's 90-year history), chances are high that Angelina Jolie will also don a custom wedding gown from the iconic fashion house. Barrymore can't feel too overshadowed, however, as she'll retain the distinction of being a pregnant Chanel bride when she marries Will Kopelman—son of former Chanel exec Arie Kopelman—next month. (Then again, considering the rate of growth in the Jolie-Pitt family, even that may not prove true.)

If indeed Jolie aligns her dress selection to her future husband's endorsement deal, two of Chanel's most recent collections offer an appropriately worldly aesthetic for the international mother of six. Designer Karl Lagerfeld infused his 2012 Pre-Fall collection with the ornate textures and tones of Maharaja India, mixing gilded tweeds with pearlescent silks and draped asymmetry. The Spring 2012 Chanel Couture show never actually picked a destination, as Lagerfeld staged the jet-setting collection in a mocked-up airplane cabin where 150 shades of blue flew by on elongated proportions and embroidered fabrics. See our picks below for the top Jolie-eque looks from these recent Chanel runways:

angelina-jolie-chanel-2.jpg

Photos: Fairchild Archive

While a plunging, glittering neckline (left) might appeal to the movie star's sense of dramatic glamour, the high-neck, long-sleeve looks (center; right) seem more in line with Jolie's newfound preference for coverage.

angelina-jolie-chanel.jpg

Photos: Fairchild Archive

A more conservative approach could also guide Jolie's selection from the Chanel couture collection, where a drop-waist-embellished navy gown (left), a short-sleeve bateau design (center), and side-slit gown with a matching cropped jacket offer the most bridal style.
