How to Stay Slim for
Your Wedding Day

5-slimdown-secrets-brides.jpg

Alrighty, full disclosure: Eileen Daspin, author of The Manhattan Diet (Wiley, April 2012), is a long-time pal of mine. Her book is a tell-all of sorts about how New York City women stay skinny. I pestered Eileen for some bite-sized, stay-slim info nuggets specifically for brides-to-be, and here's what she said.

If you had to pick five top tips from your book for brides-to-be...

1. Buy a pair of sneakers and use them. One way Manhattan women stay slim is that they walk everywhere. It's a way of sneaking in exercise so you don't notice it. Walking will also get you in a state of mind to do more rigorous exercise.

2. Eat foods that taste good to you, but not too much of them. Portions today are immense. Even coffee servings are obscene. Try less of better quality. Instead of a grande cappuccino at a chain, get a small macchiato at an arty coffeeshop. In New York, I love Sant Ambroeus. The coffee there tastes so much better, and I feel like I am treating myself. And instead of 150 calories (before sugar), it's about 40.

3. Make habit your friend. So many diets have endless suggestions for meals and recipes it's overwhelming. Instead, the women I interviewed told me they eat pretty much the same 50 or so foods again and again. Find what you like and stick with what works. You don't have to be Mario Batali.

4. Eat fat. Foods that have the fat zapped out of them are lower in calories, but less filling (and they taste bad!!) Eat the full-fat yogurt, just less of it. Eat real ice cream, but only half a cup. Use twp teaspoons of high quality olive oil and two teaspoons of vinegar to dress your salad instead of non-fat diet dressing. Good food will be more satisfying.

5. Cook! The biggest surprise to me was how many women I interviewed cooked at home. When you make your own food, you have control over the quality of ingredients and portion. You also feel more connected to what you eat and will pay more attention than if eating food prepared by others.

How can brides keep their expectations in check, and not get TOO obsessed about pre-wedding weight loss? Get Eileen's answer after the jump.

4 Surprising Tips to Avoid Getting Sick on Your Wedding Day

health-tips.jpg

The last thing you need on your wedding day is a cold. Or the flu. Or, hey, even PMS. To avoid any number of ailments in the months leading up to your celebration, weigh these four unexpected tips from anti-aging expert and Harvard Medical School alumn Dr. Ed Park:

Consider Birth Control Pills
Assuming you have tried them before and have no health limitations, consider taking birth control pills for the two-to-three months leading up to the wedding. The pills will counter irregular ovulation due to stress, curb any premenstrual 'tendencies,' and help you avoid a period or dysfunctional bleeding that could put the kibosh on honeymoon plans. By taking a pill that you have tolerated well in the past, you can virtually eliminate the problems of not ovulating. And by the second or third month, spotting and persistent ovulation problems are minimal and PMS is usually greatly reduced compared to your natural surges and withdrawals.

Prevent Cold and Flu
Get vaccinated for this season's flu strains. Wash your hands frequently after being in any public spaces or around kids. Never touch or rub your eyes, as that's the main way people contract colds and flus. Tip: Since sick Americans typically don't wear surgical masks like in many East Asian cultures, claim to have a mild cold and wear a mask at the office to protect yourself from coworkers hacking and sneezing in nearby cubicles.

Meditate
Learn to meditate. If incense, chakras, and chanting aren't your style, take 5-10 minutes a day to be in a quiet place with your eyes closes, just to be alone with your thoughts. You need to learn to control your breathing, understand and embrace your fears and fantasies, and visualize your desired and attainable wedding goals.

Activate Your Telomerase
Telomerase is an enzyme that scientists have shown to reverse the signs and symptoms of aging. So what activates telomerase? Sleep, immune health, meditation, exercise, and proper nutrition all seem to improve health by activating that universal stem-cell-healing engine called telomerase. Get In Shape with These Fun
New Fitness Classes

Equinox-fitness-classes.jpg

Spring and summer weddings are on the horizon, and if you've been looking for a way to rebound from winter fitness hibernation, take note: Equinox Fitness Clubs are adding two fun new classes to their spring fitness lineup.

TORCH classes offer a killer full-body cardio and movement routine, designed by Harlem natives and YouTube superstars The BarTendaz. More than just a way to lose weight, TORCH also has a feel-good aspect: The team regularly promotes community cohesion by taking their unique style of "street exercise" to schools and community centers to promote cardiovascular health. Not surprisingly, the high-energy classes are also a ton of fun (think high-intensity hip-hop music mixed with martial arts and music video worthy dance moves).

Thread, Equinox's lower intensity option, utilizes advanced yoga science to properly align muscles, increase flexibility and enhance mind-body awareness. The 75-minute class features stretching, core-work, and yoga poses--an excellent follow-up to TORCH or any cardiovascular workout (it's also invigorating on its own, too, though).

For even extra motivation, check out Equinox's new line of workout apparel by I Am Athletics. Each piece, featuring phrases like "I Am Powerful" and "I Will Persist Until I Succeed," is printed in reverse (so when you look in the mirror while exercising, it speaks directly to you).

The TORCH and Thread classes are available nationally, check out Equinox's website for locations near you.—Leigh Bond

One Bride's Plan to Shape Up
for Her Wedding

soul-cycle-get-in-shape-for-your-wedding.jpg

I've been hearing a lot of talk about how SoulCycle—a Manhattan-based workout studio that offers intense spinning classes—is an amazing way to get in shape for your wedding day. After all, it's how Chelsea Clinton got into such fabulous shape for her wedding last year. To get a better sense of how the program works, we asked bride-to-be Allison Holmes (pictured above with her fiancé), a manager at SoulCycle Tribeca, to share her wedding-shape-up program with us—we'll be checking back in with Allison over the next few months to follow her progress. But first, we asked her to share a bit about herself and her goals:

"I got engaged in August, 2010 and purchased my wedding gown a month later—a strapless dress with a trumpet silhouette. I love it, but it's absolutely unforgiving. When I saw the photos my mother took when I tried on the sample, I knew I had work to do. I was a dancer for years, but after I sustained an injury and transitioned to a desk job, I have struggled to maintain my ideal shape. Then I found SoulCycle. It's a perfect fit for me because the classes are centered around music, and the instructors keep it new and fresh.

"I started my wedding regimen about a month ago, with four SoulCycle classes a week and a 30-50 minute gym workout five days a week, consisting of light free weights for my upper body, loads of squats, lunges, and plyometrics for my lower body, and plenty of core work. I rest on the weekends. Along with my workout plan, I've also modified my eating habits. I'm terrible at dieting, so I've tried to make small changes. I've greatly reduced my intake of complex carbs, and I try to fill up on protein, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.

"My goal is to walk down the aisle on July 16th looking and feeling like I did when I was dancing every day. Iwant to see long, lean muscles. So far, the journey hasn't necessarily been harder or easier than I expected. Since I stay so busy, the trick is fitting several fully loaded workouts into short amounts of time—rather than one daunting two- or three-hour workout to tackle each day. I spend about 45 minutes before and after each work day either in the gym or in a SoulCycle class. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can accomplish by my wedding in July!"

To track Allison's progress over the coming months, keep checking back into Aisle Say. Find out more about the SoulCycle program at soul-cycle.com, and check out all of our diet and fitness content. —Lauren Matthews
